Causes of Acne/Triggers
There are many things or situations that can cause acne to
occur on the human body.
Sexual hormones in both teenagers and adults can cause
acne. Women tend to be more prone to acne than men especially
during ovulation, menstruation and childbirth. The ratio of
male to female hormones change during these times and causes
the stimulation of the oil producing glands which causes acne
to occur.
Stress and anxiety also contribute to acne eruptions.
When under stress your body produces stress hormones such
as cortisol. Studies show that this primary stress hormone
can stimulate an over production of oil from the sebaceous
glands in the skin causing acne breakouts to occur.
Some medications and steroids. Medicines that contain
bromides and iodides, barbiturates and lithium can cause acne
flare ups.
Genetics are often related to acne.
Heavy oil or use of some types of make up.
The over use of abrasive cleansers and cleansing too
frequently.
Using astringent facial cleansers can dry out the
skin causing the body to create more sebum to compensate.
Harsh exfoliators can damage existing spots and spread
infection.
Squeezing or picking of whiteheads, blackheads and
spots can send the infection deeper into the skin and cause
scarring.
Knowing the cause of your breakouts can help to control the
number that you experience. Sometimes it is beneficial to
keep a diary of your acne breakouts to help determine whether
or not your acne has triggers.
