FAQ'S
Q. Is outgrowing Acne possible?
A. It does depend on the
person. There are some people who experience acne for the
first time in their adolescents and still experience it well
into adulthood. On a positive note, acne can be treated so
that it is not a constant worry.
Q. Is Acne Hereditary?
A. Unfortunately, YES! If
your parents had acne as teens then there is a good chance
it will be passed on to you and your siblings. The greatest
news is that there are WAY better acne treatments on the market
today than there were when your parents were growing up!
Q. Do certain foods cause Acne?
A. Eating a healthy, wholesome
diet rich in fruits, vegetables and fiber will help keep your
skin healthy. However, it is difficult to prove that chocolate,
french fries or other greasy foods may cause acne. If you
find that your skin breaks out after eating these types of
foods then it is best to stay away from them!
Q. Should I squeeze or pick my acne?
A. NO WAY!!! Squeezing or
popping your zits will spread inflammation, increase swelling
and redness, and damage the delicate tissues under your skin.
Q. Is it okay to go out into the
sun?
A. There are always risks
to going into the sun...but it is not going to clear up your
acne if that is what you are thinking! A sunburn can actually
increase the skin's oil production. Make sure you where a
SPF 15 or higher when basking in the rays!
Q. Can I wear Makeup?
A. Makeup can be so irritating
to the skin and can cause acne to become worse. The bad thing
about this happening is that people tend to apply more makeup
to hide the acne breakouts that may have been caused by the
makeup itself! If you must wear makeup then choose products
that are labelled "noncomedogenic" (non-acne-causing).
Q. Shaving irritates my acne, what can
I do?
A. This can be such a HUGE
pain! Here are some helpful hints to try:
Use a shaving gel instead of a cream. Try a double-bladed
razor instead of an electric shaver. Try shaving in the shower
as the steam will help to soften your whiskers. Shave only
in the direction your hair grows.
Q. I play sports, what can I do to eliminate
acne from getting worse?
A. Sweating can cause acne
to become worse. A good rule of thumb is to wash soon after
playing a sport so that the time for bacteria to grow is eliminated.
Tight clothing and close-fitting athletic equipment (bike
helmet) can irritate your skin so it is best to avoid wearing
these things if you can. If you can't then try consulting
a dermatologist if your acne is getting worse.
Q. When should I consult a doctor or
dermatologist?
A. Seeing a doctor can be
intimidating for most people, but if you are experiencing
severe acne and the treatments you are using are not working
then a dermatologist may be worth seeing. It is recommended
to consider seeing a dermatologist when you experience the
following signs/symptoms:
- Non-prescription acne products have not worked for you
- You have acne scars as well as pimples
- You have large, painful acne bumps
- *You have dark patches where pimples used to be
- You are not sure if your problem is acne
- You want a doctor's evaluation of your acne
Q. If treatment is necessary, how long
should I take it?
A. Your doctor or dermatologist
will give you all the information needed about how long you
should be on a certain medication. Make sure you follow the
dose recommendation made by your doctor. Skipping or doubling
up on your medication will not be beneficial and may make
your acne worse or take longer to get rid of.
Q. Is there a cure for acne?
A. No, there is no known
cure for acne but it can certainly be controlled.
Q Does acne eventually go away or will
I suffer with it forever?
A. Unfortunately, acne may
last a lifetime or be cyclical. Some people experience acne
in their adolescents and then it may appear again in late
adulthood. It is a disease that involves hormones and the
production of too much oil. Some people may only experience
it once and then never have a problem with it again.
Q. I am still getting acne even when
I wash my face several time a day, why is that?
A. Washing your face several
times a day will remove dirt, excess oils and dead skin cells.
Just using water alone will not clear up acne or prevent it.
Washing the skin twice a day with a mild soap or using appropriate
acne treatments will usually help.
Q I have just started to eat lots
of fruit and vegetables, will this clear up my acne?
A. Eating a wholesome, balanced
diet will definitely help to keep your body healthy and you
may see some changes in your acne. Everyone should have a
well-balanced diet to maintain health. Drinking lots of water
daily will help to flush the toxins out of your system, 6-8
glasses of water is recommended.
Q. Does stress cause acne?
A. This is a highly debatable
topic when it is associated with acne. Some people believe
stress does cause acne or that acne breakouts cause stress.
Stress can have many physiological effects on the body including
hormonal changes that may theoretically lead to acne.
Q. How can I treat blackheads?
A. Blackheads are a form
of acne and can be treated with the same methods that you
are already using.
