Types of Acne

There are several types of acne and determining which one you have will assist you in finding a way to treat them effectively.

Non-Inflammatory

Whiteheads (open comedo) are caused when a pore becomes blocked, then closes and bulges out. The white appearance of the is caused by the bacteria inside the blocked pore turning the sebum to "free fatty acid".

Blackheads (closed comedo) are caused by partially blocked pores that stay open and the top darkens. They appear black because of the melanin pigment of the dead skin cells not from dirt.

Inflammatory

Papules are small, red, firm bumps or spots. They can be tender to touch and are the mildest form of inflammatory acne.

Pustules are larger, red and clearly inflamed pus-filled spots. They usually do not contain much bacteria. A chemical irritation from sebum components such as free fatty acids cause the inflammation of the pustules.

Nodules are large hard bumps under the skin's surface. They are filled with pus and are lodged deep within the skin. Nodules develop when the contents of a comedo have spilled into the surrounding skin and the local immune system responds, producing pus.

Cysts are similar to nodules, but are open and infected deep in the skin causing inflamation.
